UNH Recruits Update: Week 29

United State Hockey League Playoffs

Waterloo Black Hawks
In the first round of the USHL Playoffs, 2012 UNH Recruit Jamie Hill, 2013 Recruit Matias Cleland, and the Waterloo Black Hawks (#3 Seed) faced the Tri-City Storm (#6 Seed) in a best-of-three series. The Black Hawks defeated the Storm in two games. In the first game, Jamie Hill earned the #1 Star on the strength of 2 goals and an assist. One of Hills' goals was short-handed while the other came on a Waterloo power play. In the second game - a 3-2 victory by Waterloo - Hill added an assist. In the series with Tri-City, Matias Cleland finished with a +/- rating of +1. 2013 Recruit Dylan Maller did not play for Tri-City in the playoffs due to injury.

The second round matchup between Waterloo and the Omaha Lancers is a best-of-five series. Omaha won the first game 4-2. Despite the loss, Jamie Hill had an outstanding game for Waterloo posting 2 assists and generating 7 shots on goal. The Black Hawks tied the series by winning the second game 4-2. Game 3 will be played in Waterloo this Friday.

Team USA
Over the last 6 regular season games, 2013 UNH Recruit Tyler Kelleher scored 6 goals for Team USA. He ended the season as the leading goal scorer for the Under-17 U.S. National Team Development Program. The combined record of the Under-17 and Under-18 teams allowed Team USA to finish #6 in the Eastern Conference of the USHL. Team USA played the #3 Seed Dubuque Fighting Saints in the first round of the playoffs.

In Game 1, Tyler Kelleher scored a goal on 2 shots but Team USA lost to Dubuque 3-6. Kelleher scored another goal in Game 2 but Dubuque ended the series with a 7-3 victory. Kelleher tied with Tyler Motte for the most playoff goals on Team USA. It is anticipated that Tyler Kelleher will play for the Under-18 NTDP team next season.

Sioux City Musketeers
2012 UNH Recruit Maxim Gaudreault and the Sioux City Musketeers (#5 Seed) played the Fargo Force (#4 Seed) in the first round. Fargo won the first two games 5-1 and 2-1. Gaudreault generated 2 shots on goal in each game.

UNH Recruits Update: Week 28

Player of the Week - Maxim Gaudreault

In the next to last game of the regular season, 2012 UNH Recruit Maxim Gaudreault scored the game-winning goal against the Sioux Falls Stampede. He also added 2 assists and finished the game with a +3 rating. In his second season with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL, Gaudreault has doubled his offensive output in most categories. His goal scoring increased from 6 last season to 15 this season. His total points improved from 14 to 31. Gaudreault's 5 game-winning goals tied him for the lead on the Sioux City squad. His +/- rating for the entire 60-game season was +4.

Sioux City finished the regular season in 5th place in the Western Conference of the USHL. Gaudreault and his Musketeer teammates will face the Fargo Force in the best-of-three, first-round playoff series beginning tonight.

United States Hockey League:

The first round of the USHL Playoffs begin tonight. The top 2 teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences earned a bye for the opening round. In each Conference, the #3 seed plays the #6 seed and the #4 seed plays the #5 in a best-of-three series. The higher seed has the home ice advantage for the entire first round.

The following UNH Recruits will be playing in the opening round of the playoffs:

~ Jamie Hill, Matias Cleland and the Waterloo Black Hawks finished #3 in the Western Conference and will face the #6 seed, Tri-City Storm. Dylan Maller is not expected to play for the Storm in the first round due to injury.

~ Maxim Gaudreault and the Sioux City Musketeers finished #5 in the Western Conference and will play #4 seed Fargo Force.

~ Tyler Kelleher and Team USA finished #6 in the Eastern Conference and will play #3 Dubuque Fighting Saints.

1995 Prospect Cam Marks Commits to UNH

A high-scoring defenseman from the British Columbia Major Midget League (BC MML) has committed to play for the University of New Hampshire in the Fall of 2014. 6'0", 160 lbs. Cam Marks (DOB: 4/9/1995), a right shot defenseman from North Vancouver, British Columbia, is the second 1995-born defenseman from that Western Canadian province to accept an offer to play for UNH. Marks is planning to join Dylan Chanter - a big intimidating defenseman who recently completed his rookie season in the BCHL - for the 2014-15 season.

Despite missing 15 games due to injury, Cam Marks finished the regular season as the third leading scorer among defensemen on the Vancouver Northwest Giants. In 25 games, Marks scored a goal and 16 assists and remarkably, he had no penalties. His 17 points tied him for 12th place among all defensemen in the BC MML.

The Vancouver Northwest Giants are a perennial powerhouse in British Columbia. This season, the Giants won their 4th consecutive British Columbia Midget Major Playoff Title. Last weekend, Marks and the Giants challenged the Red Deer Rebels for the Pacific Regional Championship. The winner of Pacific Region advances to the Telus Cup competition, which determines the National Midget Championship in Canada. The Giants lost the best-of-three series with the Rebels winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 4-3 in overtime. Across the five playoff games this season, Cam Marks had 1 assist and no penalties.

The Vancouver Northwest Giants also won the 2010-11 Regular Season Title in the BC MML. Cam Marks scored 4 goals and 26 assists in 38 games and was the third leading scorer among all defensemen in the league. In the playoffs, the Giants won the Pacific Regional Championship and advanced to the National Championship Series in Saint John's Newfoundland. The Giants won 4 out of 5 games in the round-robin competition but lost in the semi-finals and bronze medal game. Across the 7 games of the 2011 Telus Cup Championship, Cam Marks was the leading scorer among defensemen with a goal and 8 assists. In fact, Marks tied for 4th overall in scoring.

As you might expect, a talented young Canadian like Cam Marks has attracted the attention of teams in the top Canadian Junior Leagues. In the 2010-11 season, Marks was "listed" by the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. Though he was not drafted by the WHL Giants, they acquired his WHL rights and added him to their protected list.

This past season, the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League maintained the BCHL rights to Cam Marks. In November, Marks was called up to play two games for the Vees. Marks scored an assist and had no penalties.

UNH fans who have followed the team's recruiting in recent years will recognize another former defenseman from the Vancouver Northwest Giants. In January, 2008, a 5'9", 135 lbs., 15-year-old defenseman named Joey Laleggia played an exhibition game at the Whittemore Center. At the time, Laleggia was the leading scorer among the defensemen on the Vancouver Northwest Giants. He finished the 2007-08 regular season with 7 goals and 34 assists which made him the third leading scorer among defensemen in the British Columbia Midget Major League. Soon after his visit to UNH, Laleggia verbally committed to play for the Wildcats in the 2010-11 season. However, in the summer of 2010, Laleggia withdrew his commitment to UNH stating that "looking back now, I'd say it [committing at age 15] was too early" and that the situation with UNH "got a little complicated."

Laleggia went on to commit to Denver University. A few days ago, Laleggia was named the Hockey Commissioner's Assocation National Rookie of the Year. Needless to say, UNH hopes that Cam Marks will enroll at UNH and achieve a level of success that approaches Laleggia's accomplishments.

UNH Recruits Update: Week 27

Player of the Week - Tyler Kelleher

In his first game in the USHL last September, Tyler Kelleher scored 2 goals for Team USA. Kelleher is finishing off the regular season with another scoring blitz. In two games last week, Kelleher scored 2 goals and 3 assists. In a 5-4 victory over the Indiana Ice on Friday, he finished with a +/- rating of +4 and was awarded the #1 Star for the game.

Tyler Kelleher is now the leading scorer for the Under-17 U.S. National Team Development Program. His 16 goals in 35 games places him in a tie for the team's lead in goal scoring. Kelleher, who plays center, is also a very accurate shooter. His shooting percentage is .184; 16 goals in 87 shots on goal.

Both the Under-17 and Under-18 NTDP Teams compete in the United States Hockey League. At the end of the USHL regular season, the combined record of the two teams determines Team USA's place in the final standings. This season, the combined record of the two USA teams was good enough to qualify for the 6th and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference of the USHL. The Under-17 team competes in post-season play.

There is one week remaining in the regular season. Kelleher and Team USA have one game left against the Indiana Ice. The outcome will not affect Team USA's seeding. The first round of the USHL playoffs begins on April 16th. Team USA will play the #3 Seed in the Eastern Conference in a best-of-three series. Team USA's opponent will be either the Dubuque Fighting Saints or the Indiana Ice, depending on how those two teams finish.

~ Shortly after I posted last week's UNH Recruit Update, 2012 Recruit Jamie Hill was awarded the CCM Offensive Player of the Week in the USHL.

With one week remaining in the regular season of the USHL, most of the playoff berths have been determined. The top 6 teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences have qualified for the USHL Playoffs. 5 UNH Recruits currently playing for USHL teams will be eligible to participate in the playoffs:

UNH Recruits Update: Week 26

Player of the Week - Jamie Hill

As the Waterloo Black Hawks battle to finish 1st in the Western Conference of the USHL, 2012 Recruit Jamie Hill has stepped up his game. With four games remaining in the regular season, Waterloo (70 points) trails second-place Lincoln by only 2 points and first-place Omaha by 3. Last week, the Black Hawks won all three games and Jamie Hill posted some impressive numbers. In the 4-2 win over Tri-City, Hill had 3 assists and a +/- rating of +3. He added 2 more assists in the 4-1 victory over Muskegon. Last night, Waterloo defeated Lincoln, one of the teams they are chasing, 4-1 and Hill scored a goal and an assist.

Jamie Hill is now the 5th leading scorer on the Waterloo Black Hawks. In 50 games, Hill has 8 goals and 25 assists. In his first two seasons in the USHL, Hill scored 23 and 26 points respectively. Early in March, Hill announced on his twitter account that he had been accepted at the University of New Hampshire. The right-shot forward will be a freshman on the 2012-13 UNH squad.

British Columbia Hockey League:

~ 2014 Recruit Dylan Chanter and the Merritt Centennials have given the Penticton Vees a run for their money in the BCHL Playoffs. Penticton entered the playoffs as the winningest team in BCHL history. After losing the first game of the final series in the Interior Conference, Chanter and the Cents won the second game on the road 4-3. Chanter assisted on the game-winning goal. When the series moved to Merritt for Game 3, both the Vees and the Cents registered 26 shots on goal. The Vees won 3-2. In Game 4, Merritt lost in overtime 3-2. Again, the SOG were fairly even with Penticton edging Merritt 45-41. The Cents face a must-win situation in Game 5 which will take place tonight in Penticton. The winner of the series will advance to the Fred Page Cup Finals against the winners of the Coastal Conference.

United States Hockey League:

~ 2012 Recruit Maxim Gaudreault and the Sioux City Musketeers clinched a playoff berth last week by winning 2 games against Des Moines and one against Fargo. Gaudreault had 3 assists which raised his total points for the season to 27. In this, his second season in the USHL, Gaudreault has doubled his scoring output.

There are only 4 games remaining in the regular season of the USHL. The top 6 teams in both the Western and Eastern Conferences qualify for the USHL Playoffs. If the season ended today, 5 UNH Recruits currently playing for USHL teams would be eligible to participate in the playoffs:
